About This Dram
And so we’ve come to the end of our “Summer of Blends”. What a journey it’s been. We’ve had numerous spectacular whiskies from around the world across tastings, masterclasses. and in-store drams. Two of which scored over 95 points – Old Perth 23 winner of Blend Vs Blend, and Big Peat 26 the showpiece of Indy Showcase 3! Dram E59 was one more Old Perth for the road – so it’s only fitting that we also celebrate Big Peat’s big win with a special curtain call from him too. But wait – he has a twin! You can try both side-by-side for only $8.
The Big Peat Feis Ile editions are a limited-run special edition variant of the classic Big Peat recipe. Each year sees another edition released during Feis Ile – the Islay Festival of Music and Malt. Here at The Strath, we’re always excited to get our allotment. Unfortunately, last year’s case went missing in some deep dark corner of the LDB warehouse. We thought it was long gone – but alas it arrived a couple of weeks ago! Also arriving a couple of weeks ago was the 2019 edition – so this is the perfect time to try them both! Below are our notes on the 2019 edition.
Tasting Notes
Enticing hints of sweet creamy fudge that morphed into candied lemon rinds and fresh gooseberries.
Strangely enough, we found green tomatoes. Not a note I think any of us have found before in a whisky! The peat came through a little ashy with some bacon grease notes. Then the fruit hits us with red apple rind and sour kiwis. Big Peat’s feeling fruity this year!
