About This Dram

That helipad we painted on the roof is still paying dividends! Another "Airport Exclusive" has landed on our shelves - and this time it's yet another special edition from Bruichladdich! When the Laddie Ten was discontinued due to lack of stock, it was replaced by the somewhat divisive Classic Laddie which is a non-age-statement whisky. Now, as stocks are being replenished there is a new kid on the block - the Laddie Eight. Unfortunately (for those not in Victoria) this is a limited quantity release only available in airports - which is normally a weird wonderland of non-age-statement special editions. Refreshing then to see a whisky proudly proclaiming to be eight years old. The malt in this edition is entirely distilled after the distillery re-opened in 2000, meaning that it's a slightly different style and approach to the whiskies from before they closed in 1995. These malts are now mostly reserved for special editions such as the "Black Arts". The new style is not too dissimilar to the old, the distillery was after all refurbished - not rebuilt. All of the records were assumedly intact, and the recipe probably didn't change much. What has changed however is a much more carefully managed cask selection and storage. This edition uses American and European Oak to achieve a complex tapestry of flavours. Even at 8 years, you can tell that whisky was lovingly raised. Being presented at a solid 50% abv only helps.

Tasting Notes

There were aromas of sweet honey and citrus, then tropical fruits with a dry malt note coming along after. On the palate, there was something spicy, zesty and punchy. Like a salad dressing made with lemon juice and Tobasco. It also held a lot of woody spice notes like cardamom, as well as a nice dose of coastal brine.
