Review of the 2009 batch

Why This Bottle?

I hope that everyone has had a wonderful long weekend! This year we're marking the occasion not with a Canadian whisky - but rather a Scotch whisky which was made specifically for Canada. That's right, this edition of GlenDronach was created to fill in a gap in the marketplace that was created by a legal dispute. Not exactly the most romantic of origin stories, but if it results in more fabulous whisky being available here then I'm not one to complain.

Strath Panel Tasting Notes

On the nose, it presented quite chocolaty - reminiscent of Galaxy Minstrels. Nutmeg, Darjeeling tea and baked ginger biscuits (cookies) with a touch of maple syrup. Further exploration lead to the cookie part of an oreo - no cream. Upon resampling later on, it showed a curious berry side of itself - perhaps a blackberry pie. The palate greets us with black peppers, cherries, walnuts, dates, brazil nuts and light fennel. Then later on it opened up to reveal more earthy coffee-like sherry notes, with a finish of mixed nuts and once again that ginger biscuit element which was so inviting on the nose.
